A book is ageless, timeless, limitless; it evolves together with its companion and opens unexpected horizons...
They are the best way to play and are free of monotony and boredom!
Books are beyond fads, so you will find them in all shapes, sizes and colours: large, small, paperback, hardback, cloth... even waterproof plastic books! There are books for all ages: stories to dream with, letters for learning, with stickers, with drawings to colour, with giant illustrations that are full of life... From the humble nature of the classics to the most avant-garde displays. A book is for a lifetime and with it they will discover the incredible world of reading.
The first years of life are also when boys and girls pick up their most important habits. That's why it is essential to contribute to their love of reading from the very beginning. Something as simple as reading a story to them can be the perfect bridge for awakening their interest and ensuring that their fondness grows over the years.
Reading is also an activity that gives them great moments and enriches them as people.
FIVE IDEAS FOR PLAYING WITH A BOOK:
1. PLAYING WITH VOICES:
Any story, no matter how short, can become a game of voices and sounds. Children love to hear the changes of tones: high-pitched voices, low voices, those that imitate children, a witch, the sounds of water, the wind, animals... This way they learn to identify the different characters: good ones, bad ones, young ones or elderly ones. In fact, any creative element will catch their attention!
Note: For boys and girls aged 0 to 8.
2. DRAW THE STORY:
All they need are coloured pencils, paper and a narrator. The game consists of the children representing the different scenes in the story: the beginning, the crux and the ending. They can draw as many pictures as they like: what's important is that they set their creativity free. And looking at their drawings can tell you hundreds of things: the things that interest them most will be largest, the things they like least will be left out or made very small... They'll love having their own illustrations for the stories!
Note: For boys and girls aged 3 to 8. From the age of 6 years you can also suggest that they write short texts below their drawings, letting them produce their own classic stories.
3. LET'S PLAY THEATRE:
It's time to take out from the dressing-up chest: a hat, some gloves, plastic necklaces, belts or a vest. Any old clothes will make a perfect costume, and a set of children's make-up will help create the characters with a moustache, a scar or some blusher. They can put on their favourite story!
Note: For boys and girls aged 5 to 8. From the age of 7 years you can also suggest that children write their own short script to adapt the story from a book.
4. THE SUPER-DETECTIVE:
If you want to develop their attention to details, simply suggest that they be a "Super Detective". The game consists of finding secret clues: they can be colours, words that begin with "A", with "B", plural words, or any other type of distinctive words. You can set a time or word limit and then think of a big reward... How about their favourite dessert? It is wonderful for spelling, vocabulary and language!
Note: For boys and girls aged 7 to 12. Each detective needs their own detective notebook and a pen to write down all the clues. If several children are participating, each one can use a different colour pen.
5. INVENT ANOTHER ENDING:
Everyone knows of a book with a boring ending, so the solution is to try and make up the perfect ending with the whole family. Everyone provides their own ideas and, as a family, they decide which "piece of story" is best. It is a way to talk about a book: the characters, the context, the different situations, etc. The game can be more complicated depending on the ages of the participants.
Note: For boys and girls aged 5 to up. This game is ageless and there are hundreds of endings to change.
